Why Political Detox?

Let’s talk about the current US political environment. I’ll start with this disclaimer – this is not about trying to change anyone’s political beliefs, there’s enough of that already. It is about helping people find their inner peace no matter who is elected.

Politics in the United States is deeply divided right now, with people sharply split over and often downright hostile toward opposing viewpoints. And unfortunately it appears things might get worse before getting better.

Clearly, we need to focus more on finding personal peace and resilience in these charged and chaotic times. But if you are waiting for the right candidate to be elected before you have inner peace, you’ll never get it. Why? Because you are surrendering your own power and giving it to situations you can’t control.

So what can we do about it? I’ve identified 3 phases in the process to Detox Politically.

Phase 1 is Realization: Recognize the current political media ecosystem is toxic. Companies make money by inflaming fears about the other side, they are not working in your best interest. Sean Hannity and Rachel Maddow are not your friends. They are highly paid entertainers throwing raw meat to their tribes.

Political news, social media, and videos are mental “junk food” purposely created using outrageous stories to addict you to their content, no matter what it does to your mental health. Junk food is not real nutrition, and high-conflict political content is not a real reflection of our society.

This relentless barrage of negative news and aggressive debates increases stress and anxiety, leaving many people feeling helpless, angry, and isolated. For many, the current toxic political climate disrupts our everyday life.

So the first step is Realization, realizing there is a problem. What does this look like? Loss of sleep, worry over the future, feelings of dread, isolation from friends and family, mental or physical health issues caused by stress, obsessive negative talk on social media posts. Or how about this one: becoming the worst version of yourself when in conflict. This is exactly what happened to me on Facebook. Other people’s posts would upset me, and I’d respond from a place of division and conflict. When I saw what was happening I was very embarrassed at my own behavior. I realized that wasn’t who I am and I needed to change.

Perhaps you too are at a point where you realize there’s a problem and you want to do something about it. Remove the stress that’s causing health issues. Reconcile with those you care about. Become a better version of yourself.

So that’s phase 1, Realization. In my next post I'll talk about Phase 2 of Political Detox. In the meantime if you want to know more go to my site politicaldetoxcoaching.com . You can download my free ebook, "5 Steps to Immediately Start Detoxing from Politics” here.
